American Idol 5/23/2007- Finale – Top 2 Results

In just two short hours (really about 1:37, since I’ll fast forward through most of the commercials on my DVR), I’ll know who won this year’s American Idol.  We’ll see if my prediction that Jordin would win is right, and we’ll see how many stupid, pointless videos they can play leading up to the results.  I’m eager to get started, but I did want to comment on something first.

An astute, anonymous reader posted a comment to my entry last night about the recap videos.  Jordin’s This Is My Now recap segment is much different than her actual performance.  She ended her performance crying/sniffling, but in her recap, she finished the song perfectly.  At first, I had ignored this, and thought maybe her “crying” was more sound problems, which had be prevalent in the first half hour of last night’s show.  But now that I’ve looked at it, it’s definitely a different video.  So the question is – why?  Did they pull the tape from dress rehearsal?  Did they do this on purpose, or was it an accident?  Perhaps they couldn’t get the instant replay machine to work and had to go back to other footage.  Or, perhaps they were trying to rig the results.  The latter possibility seems a bit far-fetched to me, since they didn’t replace her actual performance.  Of course, I’m on West coast delay to begin with, so there are 3 hours that they could use to re-do a segment, but then why didn’t they edit the actual performance, which people are much more likely to remember.  This was an odd occurrence, and I hope it didn’t affect the voting in any way.  Just because Idol is insanely popular doesn’t mean they can be sloppy!

And now, finally, on to the show!

UPDATE:  Beatboxer from Bothell or the Sweatheart from Arizona?  This is AmErican Idol.

UPDATE:  Ricky and the band, hello!

UPDATE:  100,000 auditions, 7 cities, 49 hours of TV..

UPDATE:  Randy is wearing yet another odd jacket, Paula looks a little better, Simon is already bored.

UPDATE:  Pointless song #1.  I Saw Her Standing There.  Some cool harmonies in the middle, but the choreography still stinks!

UPDATE:  Gwen Stefani live on stage during her tour!  But the transition was a little odd there, I’m not sure that was actually a live interaction with Gwen and Ryan.

UPDATE:  Crazy bow/bunny dress!  Wow, uh, that girl has some interesting  outfits.  I like the song, though.

UPDATE:  Wait… is she lip syncing?  The fast sections didn’t quite match up with her lips.

UPDATE:  Kelly Clakson with Never Again – this is a good song on the radio, so how does she do live?

UPDATE:  This sounds a bit flat and strained… Not one of her best performances, but she does have good stage presence.  And she looks a lot better than she did during Idol Gives Back.  Maybe she isn’t pregnant after all.

UPDATE:  Ah, the golden Idols!  I forgot about these.

UPDATE:  Golden Idol – Best Presentation – Margaret Fowler (the Big Bird lady).  This lady is crazy!

UPDATE:  Whoa a poem…  it does not rhyme. :(   Ryan says it was a haiku.  I’m not sure, I couldn’t understand a word she was saying.

UPDATE:  The Top 6 guys – and the return of Sanjaya to the American Idol stage UGH!  But Smokey Robinson’s here, so I guess that balances out.  And the white outfits are kinda cool, even if Memorial Day isn’t until next week.

UPDATE:  Doug E Fresh!  Blake! Beatboxing!  This is hot!  I’d buy an album of just this!  (Yes, this is a lot of exclamation points!)

UPDATE:  They actually got the voice-over guy for the Oscars to do the announcements for the Golden Idols.

UPDATE:  Golden Idol – Most Original Vocal Performance – Sholandric Stallworth.  The name is almost as ridiculous as his attempt at auditioning.  “Is my name on this?”  Ryan:  “Um, no, it’s a low-budget show.”

UPDATE:  The Top 6 girls back on stage.  Ooo – that means we get to see Haley “legs” Scarnato again.  And in a cute white dress, no less.  Wait – Gina in white?  Not sure that’s ever happened before.

UDPATE:  Gladys Night comes in.  The girls do a much better job of harmonizing in the background than the guys did.  Remember back 11 weeks ago when we were saying how much better the women were than the men?  Yeah, they still are.

UPDATE:  This year in the finale, there weren’t the choir singers in the robes.  Just noticed they didn’t make their traditional appearance.

UPDATE:  Tony Bennett is back!  He’s so good.  No wonder he has so many Grammys!

UPDATE:  Golden Idol – Best Buddies Award – Jonathan and Kenneth.  “Lots of red carpet”  Also, there’s a bush baby in there somewhere.  I’m disappointed that Ryan and Simon didn’t win :(

UPDATE:  Melinda now singing with the group she used to sing back up for.  And they’re all pretty good!  Clearly a Christian group.

UPDATE:  This year’s final Ford Music video – the outtakes from all the previous videos, set to Time After Time.

UPDATE:  Blake and Jordin both get new Ford Mustangs.  That’s pretty cool – America’s classic muscle car.

UPDATE:  Carrie Underwood sings I’ll Stand By You with an acoustic version.

UPDATE: Clive Davis comes to the stage.  Report card:  Daughtry is the music industry’s biggest selling album this year.  And he is presenting an award to Carrie Underwood for 6 million album sales!

UPDATE:  Ryan says more music, more surprises, and some results AFter the Break.

UPDATE:  The African Children’s Choir – representing the Idol Gives Back effort.  And their choreography is way better than what they put into the contestant’s performances :)

UPDATE:  Oh dang – Sanjay with Joe Perry from Aerosmith.  This kid is such a spectacle.  I’m wondering when his popularity will ever fade.  Will it ever?

UPDATE:  Oh the crying girl is back!!!

UPDATE:  Green Day with Working Class Hero, part of Instant Karma, a special Save Darfur album.

UPDATE:  It’s just not possible for this to be live right now – they couldn’t have put the all that equipment on the stage that quickly after the Sanjaya performance.

UPDATE:  Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix comes out July 13th!

UPDATE:  Taylor Hicks is back!  Soul Patrol!

UPDATE:  And he breaks out the harmonica!

UPDATE:  Jordin Sparks and Ruben Studdard together!  They’re really brining back all the previous Idols this season.  Makes me wonder if they’re going to continue with another season.  I hope they do, but with Idol Gives Back this season and such a huge finale, it’s possible they’re setting up for not doing the show next year.

UDPATE:  That was a very good performance between the two of them.  Very nice.

UPDATE:  Bette Midler?  The Wind Beneath My Wings?  Why oh why?  And what is Brad Garrett doing up on the stage again?  That’s just getting annoying.

UPDATE:  And seriously, this performance is just so-so, and that leather skirt has got to go!

UPDATE:  An American Idol tribute to Sgt. Pepper?  Good songs for sure, just kind of surprising that they pulled this out of nowhere.

UPDATE:  So I just ran out of the recording on the DVR!!!  Before they made the announcement!  So now I have no idea who won!  I’m soooooo pissed!  Uh, I guess I have to look on YouTube now and hope someone uploaded the video.  And it’s not up yet.  Man… I feel so screwed over.

UPDATE:  So I checked out americanidol.com to find out the results – I figured I had to know.  Jordin is the winner, in case you hadn’t already heard.  And she definitely deserves it.  I would have liked to see Blake win since he’s awesome and new and original, but hey, he’s gonna have a great career.

UPDATE:  americanidol.com now claims that there will be another season – OK, good, I almost got worried for a moment there.  Turns out they just had a great lineup for the finale.  Props to the producers.

UPDATE:  Now I just need to find a video of the results last night to see how it went down.  Maybe it’ll be on the official website tomorrow?  Until then, this is the last American Idol blog for this year (I know, you’re so sad.)  I’ll see you again next year.  BBetz, out!

***

UPDATE:  It’s 9:30 am the following morning, and I just found the last few minutes of the show on You Tube!!!  So I figured I’d blog it just like normal, in case you really really wanted to see my comments about those 6 minutes I missed last night.  So here we go again.

UPDATE:  Back “live”  it is time!  Ryan:  “From 100,000 down to 2 and now down to 1… 609 million votes” this season, last night was a new record of 74 million votes.

UPDATE:  The Sealed Envelope!

UPDATE:  Final thoughts from the judges:  Randy:  “I gottta say Jordin, baby”  Paula:  I love you both.  “You’re both winners”  Simon: Great night last night, “but if I’m gonna call it, based on the last song, congratulations Jordin.”

UPDATE:  “The winner of AmErican Idol 2007 is…”

UPDATE:  Jordin Sparks!

UPDATE:  You could tell Blake knew he wasn’t winning, but he was very gracious on the stage – he’s a really great performer.  I can’t wait to see him in concert some day.

UPDATE:  Jordin attempts to say a few thank yous, but is a bit emotional :)

UPDATE:  Ryan:  “We’ll be back in January to do it all over again.  But now, I give the microphone to the American Idol, Jordin Sparks!”

UDPATE:  This is My Now – the last performance on the Idol stage this year.  This is definitely a much better song for Jordin.    She sings it pretty well, even when she’s a bit emotional.

UPDATE:  Oooo, Jordin Sparks gets sparks flying in the back of the stage!

UPDATE:  She is really very cute – Jordin will make a great American Idol. Congrats, Jordin!
